Protectors turned predators! The dream of homes for 2,500 families in Worli trampled by SRA administration
Mumbai | Worli
A shocking and unjust stance by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), which holds the constitutional duty of providing rightful housing to slum dwellers, has come to light in Worli. Just as the long‑delayed Sagar Darshan Housing Society and Chaitanya Sai Janata Colony Housing Society SRA projects were finally moving forward after nearly 30 years, a controversial decision by the SRA administration has once again endangered the rehabilitation of more than 2,500 families.
Administrative hurdles despite legal progress
This long‑pending project had been given momentum by a legally sound, capable, and experienced developer who complied with all rules and conditions.
In October 2024, after receiving official building permission from the SRA, construction work had begun at full pace, rekindling hope among residents.
However, while the project was progressing, the Chief Executive Officer of SRA suddenly issued a notice under Section 13(2) against the developer without any clear or transparent reason. This has thrown the entire project back into uncertainty.
On December 21, project‑affected residents held a press conference at Koli Samaj Bhavan, Worli, voicing their grievances.
Citizens’ protest against SRA officer
With sarcastic slogans such as “Mahendra Kalyankar Sir, Get Well Soon”, Worli citizens launched a strong protest against SRA officer Mahendra Kalyankar. Angered by unjust actions and administrative apathy, residents warned that if their demands continue to be ignored, they will take the drastic step of boycotting voting.
Ignoring judicial proceedings?
Not only Sagar Darshan, but even in the case of another 2,054 families’ SRA project where judicial proceedings are ongoing, similar notices have been issued. This raises a serious question: is the SRA administration violating High Court processes and constitutional boundaries?
Residents support the developer – then why obstacles?
When the developer is capable of completing the project, when residents have given clear support, and when no technical or legal hurdles exist, for whose interest is the SRA administration blocking the project? This burning question is now being asked across Worli.
For senior citizens who have waited 30 years for their homes, their future now hangs in the balance.
Due to administrative decisions, project costs and timelines are increasing, pushing the future of ordinary Marathi families into darkness.
Warning from Worli residents – agitation ahead
“We want justice, we want our homes,” cried the citizens of Worli, issuing a stern warning of launching a mass agitation against the unjust stance of the SRA administration.

Residents also appealed to the media to take an objective role, highlight this issue, and present the truth before the public.
