Mumbai, May 31, 2026 — In a groundbreaking initiative to make cinema accessible to rural audiences, ‘Kissa Shuru Talkies’ (KST) was officially launched in Mumbai. The platform aims to deliver new films directly to homes in villages where traditional theatres are unavailable, bridging a long‑standing gap in entertainment access.
The unveiling ceremony was graced by Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra’s Minister for Information Technology and Cultural Affairs, who inaugurated the initiative. Veteran actor Sachin Pilgaonkar attended as Chief Guest, alongside a host of film industry personalities including Deepak Tijori, Abhijit Panse, Viju Mane, Sameer Vidwans, Ashish Bende, Subodh Khanolkar, Priya Berde, Kushal Badrike, Santosh Juvekar, Pushkar Jog, and Vishakha Subhedar.
A congratulatory message from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was presented during the event, while it was also announced that the initiative will expand beyond Maharashtra to Karnataka and Gujarat.
Technology and Features
‘Kissa Shuru Talkies Home Cinema’ is an HDMI‑based modern device that connects directly to televisions, enabling rural audiences to enjoy new releases without traveling long distances to theatres. Every Friday, new films will be downloaded onto the device, available to viewers at an affordable fee of ₹99 per film.
The platform incorporates two patent‑pending technologies:
- Family Safe Mode — allowing families to control age‑appropriate viewing experiences.
- Producer‑to‑Audience Video Call System — enabling filmmakers and directors to interact directly with audiences in villages.
To ensure content security, the device is equipped with advanced DRM and forensic watermarking technologies.
Industry Endorsement
During the event, acclaimed director Gajendra Ahire expressed his support, calling the initiative a crucial step for rural audiences who often miss out on new releases.
Sachin Pilgaonkar remarked: “Many talukas and rural areas in Maharashtra still lack cinema halls. Audiences often travel up to 50 kilometers to watch a film. This initiative is a boon for rural viewers, offering them a festival of cinema at home. It will benefit filmmakers, producers, and audiences alike.”
Founders’ Vision
Explaining the concept, founders Santosh Birajdar, Abhishek Jathar, and Shirish Shinde said: “Thousands of villages in Maharashtra lack theatres, leaving rural audiences deprived of new films. Recognizing this need, we created Kissa Shuru Talkies to deliver quality entertainment directly to homes while also providing Marathi cinema with a new platform.”
Government Support
Minister Ashish Shelar praised the innovation: “The concept behind Kissa Shuru Talkies Home Cinema is both novel and timely. By bringing films directly to homes across villages, this initiative expands the reach of Marathi cinema and leverages technology effectively. It is a significant milestone for the industry and will help connect new generations to Marathi films.”
Conclusion
‘Kissa Shuru Talkies’ represents a transformative step in democratizing cinema access. By combining affordability, advanced technology, and cultural outreach, the initiative promises to reshape how rural audiences experience films. With expansion planned across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, the platform is set to become a vital bridge between filmmakers and millions of viewers who have long awaited accessible entertainment.
