India’s Plastics Export Industry Celebrates 70 Years of Excellence and Future-Ready Vision
PLEXCONCIL’s Platinum Jubilee and Export Excellence Awards spotlight resilience, innovation, and a roadmap to global leadership

The Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL) marked a historic milestone as it celebrated 70 years of service to India’s plastics export industry. The Platinum Jubilee was commemorated with the presentation of 148 Export Excellence Awards, recognizing outstanding exporters for their achievements during 2023–24 and 2024–25. The event reflected the sector’s evolution from a modest USD 16.5 million export base in 1955 to a thriving USD 12.5 billion industry today, with Indian plastic products reaching over 200 countries.
In a keynote address, the Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, called on the industry to set ambitious goals: a domestic market size of USD 100 billion and export earnings of USD 25 billion over the next five years. He emphasized that these targets are attainable through a strategic focus on quality, sustainability, technology, and global engagement. “India’s plastics industry can and will reach these milestones,” he affirmed.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth
Shri Goyal urged the industry to embrace 100% reuse and recycling of plastics, aligning with India’s national sustainability goals and the global shift toward circular economies. He highlighted India’s potential to lead in sustainable plastics manufacturing, encouraging investment in advanced technologies, innovative materials, and responsible production practices. This call to action reflects a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and positions India as a future-ready manufacturing hub.
Expanding Global Horizons
The Minister spotlighted the transformative impact of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) concluded and under negotiation with major economies including the UK, EFTA, USA, EU, Oman, Bahrain, and New Zealand. These agreements offer Indian exporters enhanced market access, reduced trade barriers, and greater competitiveness. Shri Goyal encouraged the industry to proactively explore these new markets and strengthen India’s role in global value chains.
Resilience During Crisis
Reflecting on the sector’s performance during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shri Goyal praised the plastics industry for its rapid response in manufacturing critical products such as medical supplies, PPE components, and essential packaging materials. This demonstrated India’s ability to meet urgent domestic needs while maintaining global supply commitments, reinforcing its reputation as a dependable sourcing destination.
Export Performance and Growth
India’s plastics exports continue to show positive momentum. From April to September 2025, the cumulative export value reached USD 6,407 million, a 4.6% increase over the same period last year. This growth underscores the sector’s resilience and adaptability in a dynamic global trade environment.
Each awardee at the ceremony represents a story of innovation, excellence, and entrepreneurial spirit. From large manufacturers powering global supply chains to MSMEs driving niche innovation, the winners reflect the diversity and strength of India’s plastics sector. Their contributions have advanced technology, generated employment, and reinforced global trust in the “Made in India” brand.
Leadership Reflections
Mr. Vikram Bhadauria, Chairman of PLEXCONCIL, expressed deep gratitude to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and congratulated all award winners. He noted that the Council’s 70-year journey mirrors the pioneering efforts of Indian exporters who have built a global presence across more than 200 markets.
Mr. Sribash Dasmohapatra, Executive Director of PLEXCONCIL, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to enabling exporters through market intelligence, global trade fairs, delegations, and capacity-building initiatives. He emphasized that the Council will continue to support the industry in navigating new opportunities and challenges.
Brand India: Trust, Quality, Reliability
Shri Goyal reiterated that Brand India today stands for trust, quality, and reliability. He stressed that quality must remain non-negotiable as India climbs the global value chain. With increasing recognition from international buyers, India is poised to become a preferred sourcing destination for high-quality plastic products.
Conclusion
The Platinum Jubilee of PLEXCONCIL was not just a celebration of the past—it was a launchpad for the future. With a renewed focus on sustainability, innovation, and global outreach, India’s plastics industry is ready to embrace its next chapter. The event concluded with a collective pledge from industry leaders to work together in positioning India as a global powerhouse in plastics manufacturing and exports, carrying forward PLEXCONCIL’s legacy into a new era of excellence.
