Joju George Unveils First Look of “Varavu”: A Gritty Survival Thriller Set in the Heart of Malabar
Directed by Shaji Kailas, the film promises high-octane action, emotional depth, and a powerful ensemble cast led by Joju George and Vani Vishwanath

Malayalam cinema’s powerhouse performer Joju George marked his birthday with the unveiling of the first look poster of his upcoming film Varavu, directed by veteran filmmaker Shaji Kailas. The poster, which features Joju glaring intensely through a shattered jeep windshield, sets the tone for what promises to be a gripping action-survival thriller. Tagged with the phrase “Game of Survival,” the visual hints at a narrative steeped in tension, resilience, and raw emotion.
Set against the rugged backdrop of the Malabar region, Varavu follows the life of Polly, also known as Polachan—a character whose journey is defined by struggle, grit, and redemption. The film explores themes of survival and justice, with Joju George portraying a man caught between his past and the unforgiving present. The first look has already sparked excitement among fans, with several celebrities including Suresh Gopi sharing it across social media platforms.
This marks the first collaboration between Joju George and Shaji Kailas, a pairing that has generated considerable buzz in the industry. Known for his mastery in crafting intense narratives, Kailas brings his signature directorial style to Varavu, blending regional authenticity with cinematic spectacle. Joju, meanwhile, continues to expand his repertoire, with Varavu adding another layer to his already diverse body of work.
Joining Joju in the film is Vani Vishwanath, often hailed as Malayalam cinema’s action queen. Her presence adds a formidable edge to the film’s action sequences, which are choreographed by some of South India’s most acclaimed stunt masters—Anup Arivu, Stunt Silva, Kai Kingston, Jacky Johnson, Phoenix Prabhu, and Kanal Kannan. Their combined expertise ensures that Varavu will deliver adrenaline-pumping moments grounded in realism and emotion.
The film also marks the return of popular actress Sukanya, adding nostalgic value for longtime Malayalam cinema fans. The ensemble cast includes Murali Gopi, Arjun Ashokan, Babu Raj, Vinci Aloysius, Saniya Iyyappan, Ashwin Kumar, Abhimanyu Shammi Tilakan, Biju Pappan, Bobby Kuryan, Azeez Nedumangad, Sreejith Ravi, Deepak Parambol, Kottayam Ramesh, Balaji Sharma, Chali Pala, and Radhika Radhakrishnan—each contributing to the film’s layered storytelling.
The screenplay is penned by A.K. Sajan, known for hits like Chinthamani Kolacase, Red Chillies, and Drona. His writing is expected to bring psychological depth and narrative complexity to Varavu, elevating it beyond a conventional action film. Cinematographer S. Saravanan captures the rugged terrain and emotional intensity of the story, while editor Shameer Mohammed ensures a taut, immersive viewing experience.
Art direction by Sabu Ram, makeup by Saji Kattakada, and costume design by Sameer Sanish contribute to the film’s visual authenticity. The production team includes Chief Associate Director Syamantak Pradeep, Production Managers Shivan Poojappura and Anil Anshad, Production Executive Prathapan Kalliyoor, and Production Controller Vinod Mangalath. PR is managed by Manju Gopinath, with stills by Hari Thirumala and digital marketing by Obscura Entertainment. Offline publicity is handled by Bringforth.
Produced under the banner of Olga Productions, with Reji Prothasis and Nicey Reji as producers and Jomy Joseph as co-producer, Varavu is being filmed across scenic and culturally rich locations including Munnar, Marayur, Theni, and Kottayam. The shoot is expected to wrap in 70 days, with post-production slated to begin immediately thereafter.
Joju George, meanwhile, is gearing up for a slate of new projects, including collaborations with directors Joshi and Bhadra. Industry insiders also hint at his upcoming Tamil film and a potential Bollywood debut, further expanding his pan-Indian appeal.
With its compelling storyline, powerhouse performances, and high production values, Varavu is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of the year. It’s not just a film—it’s a survival saga that promises to leave a lasting impact on audiences.
