UNFPA India confers the title during a special ceremony in Mumbai, reinforcing its commitment to gender rights and youth empowerment

Mumbai, 1 September 2025 — In a significant step toward advancing gender equality and youth empowerment, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India formally conferred the title of Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality upon acclaimed actor, producer, and entrepreneur Kriti Sanon. The ceremony took place at Konkan Hall, Taj Land’s End Hotel, Mumbai, and was attended by dignitaries, development professionals, media representatives, and members of the creative community.

Kriti Sanon, known for her impactful roles and growing influence in the entertainment industry, was recognized for her advocacy on issues related to women’s rights, youth development, and social inclusion. Her appointment as Honorary Ambassador aligns with UNFPA India’s strategic focus on leveraging public figures to amplify messages around gender justice and reproductive health.

The event was presided over by Ms. Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director for Bhutan, who highlighted the importance of engaging cultural influencers in development discourse. “Kriti Sanon brings authenticity, empathy, and reach. Her voice resonates with millions, especially young people. We are proud to welcome her as a partner in our mission to ensure rights and choices for all,” said Wojnar.

In her acceptance remarks, Kriti Sanon expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed her commitment to using her platform for meaningful change. “Gender equality is not a distant goal—it’s a daily responsibility. I’m honored to support UNFPA’s work and hope to contribute to conversations that empower women and girls across India,” she stated.

The ceremony featured a presentation on UNFPA’s ongoing initiatives in India, including programs focused on adolescent health, prevention of gender-based violence, and promotion of comprehensive sexuality education. The organization has been active in India for over four decades, working in partnership with government bodies, civil society, and youth networks to address critical issues affecting marginalized populations.

Attendees included representatives from media, academia, and the development sector, many of whom acknowledged the strategic value of engaging personalities like Sanon in advocacy efforts. “Public figures have the power to shift narratives. When someone like Kriti Sanon speaks about gender equality, it reaches homes, classrooms, and boardrooms,” noted one participant.

The conferment ceremony also served as a platform to reaffirm UNFPA’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Through partnerships with artists, influencers, and youth leaders, UNFPA aims to foster inclusive dialogue and drive behavioral change at scale.

Kriti Sanon’s association with UNFPA India is expected to involve participation in campaigns, public service announcements, and community outreach programs. Her background in entrepreneurship and film production also opens avenues for creative collaborations that blend storytelling with social impact.

The event concluded with a networking session and high tea, allowing stakeholders to engage in informal discussions around future initiatives and collaborative opportunities. While the focus remained on the conferment, the broader message underscored the urgency of collective action in addressing gender disparities.

UNFPA India continues to expand its outreach through innovative partnerships and youth-led platforms. The appointment of Kriti Sanon as Honorary Ambassador marks a milestone in its efforts to connect policy with public engagement, ensuring that the message of equality reaches diverse audiences across urban and rural India.

As the country navigates complex challenges related to gender, health, and social equity, initiatives like these serve as reminders that progress is possible when voices unite across sectors. With renewed momentum and influential allies, UNFPA India looks ahead to a future where every individual can live with dignity, choice, and opportunity.
