Strategic Expansion at JN Port Reinforces India’s Maritime Connectivity and Global Trade Partnerships

Mumbai, 4 September 2025 — In a landmark moment for India’s maritime infrastructure, the JN Port PSA Mumbai Terminal (BMCT) Phase-II was virtually inaugurated today by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Singapore Shri Lawrence Wong. The ceremony, held at JNPA PSA Mumbai Terminal, Gate No. 16, marked a significant milestone in India’s port-led development strategy and international collaboration in logistics and trade.
The inauguration was attended in person by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, and Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Shantanu Thakur, underscoring the national and regional importance of the terminal’s expansion.
A New Chapter in Maritime Infrastructure
The BMCT Phase-II project is a key component of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority’s (JNPA) long-term vision to enhance container handling capacity and streamline cargo movement. With this expansion, the terminal is expected to significantly boost throughput, reduce turnaround times, and support India’s growing export-import demands.
The terminal, operated by PSA International — a global port group headquartered in Singapore — represents a successful model of international collaboration. The presence of both prime ministers at the virtual inauguration highlighted the strategic partnership between India and Singapore in maritime logistics and infrastructure development.
Strategic Importance of BMCT Phase-II
Located at one of India’s busiest container ports, BMCT Phase-II adds substantial capacity to JNPA’s operations. The terminal is equipped with advanced cargo handling systems, automated yard operations, and enhanced connectivity to hinterland markets via rail and road.
Officials noted that the expansion will:
- Increase container handling capacity by several million TEUs annually
- Improve efficiency through digitized operations and smart logistics
- Strengthen India’s position as a regional transshipment hub
- Support the government’s Sagarmala initiative for port-led economic growth
